2 What is Graphics Browser?
Graphics Browser, hereafter known as GB for short, is a powerful
multiple-file browser that is operated through a DOS Graphics User Interface
(GUI). It permits up to 9 different text files to be loaded into 9
different moveable/sizeable windows and it supports the loading of multiple
files from the command line or from a list file.
This version of GB requires a VGA graphics card that supports at least
16 colors and a mouse is strongly recommended. Future versions of GB may
incorporate Hercules monochrome graphics support.
3 About Shareware
GB is Shareware. Shareware is NOT free. It is computer software
offered for sale at a set price and the only real difference between
Shareware and other commercial software products is the method of
distribution and the important "try before you buy" feature. With Shareware
you are normally licensed by the owner/author of the program to operate the
Shareware distribution copy on a trial basis. Then if you like it and make
regular use of it, you are bound to pay for it.
Users are licensed to operate Graphics Browser on their personal
computers for the purpose of test and evaluation on a trial basis for a
limited trial period. It is not possible to reasonably define any
definitive limits of a fair and equitable time period for evaluation,
therefore it is left to the user's judgment and sense of fair play as to the
time required to make a decision as to its usefulness. If the user decides
the program is not of sufficient merit to warrant purchase through
registration with New-Ware, the program should be removed from his or her
- 2 -
personal computer. Otherwise, if the program is deemed useful and is in
regular use on the user's personal computer system, registration with New-
Ware is required.
Registered users are those users that find the program useful and pay
for GB by registering that payment with New-Ware. By virtue of registration
and payment for the program, registered users are granted a license to
continue to utilize the program on their personal computer for as long as
they choose. This license authorizes the user to use the program on any
personal computer system he or she may own so long as the program is
operated on only one computer system at a time.
Site licenses for use of GB on multiple computers are available upon
request at a reduced fee that is based on the number of single machines
licensed for use.
4 How To Register
There is no functional difference between the Shareware distribution
version of GB and the registered version save the absence of the opening
Shareware screen in the registered version.
The price of GB is $20.00. You may register GB in one of three ways:

This Shareware version of Graphics Browser may be freely copied and
passed on to other individual users for their evaluation. Disk vendors
and/or distributors that desire to distribute Graphics Browser must adhere
to the guidelines presented in VENDOR.DOC. Under no circumstance may
Graphic Browser be used in conjunction with a system to retrieve and/or view
(browse) files contained on a CD-ROM.
Press Alt+R or select "Registration" from the Help menu to invoke an
interactive registration form. All pertinent information may be entered
into the dialog and then sent to the printer as a registration form.

6 Operating Graphic Browser
The GB GUI is easy and intuitive to use and all GB commands are defined
in the help file. The help file can be viewed at any time by pressing the
F1 key or selecting the "Commands" item from the Help menu.
6.1 The Main Menu
The top line of the display contains the main GB menu. Any menu can be
activated by pressing the Alt key plus the highlighted character in the menu
name or by clicking on the name with the mouse. Use the mouse or arrow keys
to select a menu item and the Enter key or mouse click to invoke the
selected item. Use the Esc key to exit a menu with no action.
6.1.1 The Files Menu
The Files menu consists of the following commands:
Open - F3
Close - Esc
Chg Dir - F2
DOS Shell
Exit - Alt+X
The "Open" command activates a file selection dialog that displays the
file names from the current directory. You may change directories in this
dialog or by selecting the "Chg Dir" command. The "Chg Dir" command invokes
a directory tree dialog in which a new default directory can be set. Use
the "DOS Shell" command to temporarily drop to DOS. The "Close" command
will close the active window and Alt+X will exit the program.
6.1.2 The Windows Menu
The Windows menu commands control the open file windows:
Size/Move - Ctrl+F5
Zoom - F5
Next - F6
Previous - Shift+F6
Close - Esc/Atl+F3
List - Alt+0
Save - Alt+S
Delete - Alt+D
The "Size/Move" command can be used by non-mouse users to move and/or
size the current window. After moving/sizing, press the Enter key to
- 5 -
preserve the current window position/size or press the Esc key to return the
window to its original position.
A window may be toggled to zoom to occupy the full screen area or zoom
back to its original size.
The "Next" and "Previous" commands make the next or previous window on
the window list active.
A list of active windows can be activated via the "List" command. You
may select a window from this list to close (delete) or to make active.
GB supports loading files according to file names stored in a text
file. The "Save" command will store the full path names of all the files
currently being viewed in a text file named GBROWSE.LST in the current
directory. The "Delete" command will delete this file if it exists.
6.1.3 The Block Ops Menu
A block of text anywhere in a viewed file may be marked for writing to
another file or for printing. The commands are:
Mark - F9
Clear - Ctrl+H
Print - Ctrl+P
Write - Ctrl+W
To mark a block of text, move the window cursor bar to the first line
of the block and press F9 or the right mouse button. Then move the cursor
bar to the last line of the block and do the same. Marked text is displayed
in a highlighted color. A block may be cleared (unmarked) by pressing
Ctrl+H.
The "Print" command will invoke a dialog box that displays the first
and last line numbers of the block and a reminder to make sure that the
printer is on-line and ready.
When writing a block to a file with the "Write" command, a dialog box
appears in which you are to enter the file name of the target file. If this
file exists, you will be given the opportunity to overwrite the file, append
to the file, or to cancel the operation.
6.1.4 The Help Menu
A help window containing brief descriptions of all the GB commands is
accessed via the "Commands" item. The "About" item displays a window that
contains version and other information.
- 6 -
Use the "Register" command to fill out an automated registration form
for mailing to New-Ware.
6.2 The Command/Status Line
The bottom line of the display is occupied by a command line that
indicates the functions of the some of the more frequently used commands.
Activate a command by pressing the indicated function key or by clicking on
the command key with the mouse.
F4 - Goto #
F5 - Zoom
F6 - Next
F7 - Show #
F8 - Search
F9 - Mark Blk
Use the "Goto #" command to jump the cursor bar to any line number in
the file.
The "Zoom" command is a toggle that alternates between normal and full
screen window size.
The "Next" command makes the next window on the master window list the
active window.
Line numbers can be displayed at the left margin of the file window and
the "Show #" command is toggles the line number display function on and off.
The "Search" command prompts you for a string to enter as a target for
a complete search of the file in the active window. The search dialog also
offers an option to use a case sensitive search and an option to start the
search at the current cursor position or at the top of the file. The target
search string is limited to 30 characters in length. If a match is found,
the cursor bar is positioned to the line where the string was found. Press
Ctrl+L to continue the search.
The "Mark Blk" command is used to mark the first and last lines of a
block of text in the file.
6.3 Command Line File Loading
GB provides a great deal of flexibility in loading text files on the GB
DOS command line. One method is to start GB with up to 9 file names on the
command line, as in the following example:
GB.EXE FILE.TXT ANOTHER.DAT C:\UTIL\MYFILE.DOC F:\DOC\NAME.TXT
- 7 -
Another option is to include a file specification on the command line
that contains DOS wildcards. For example, the command:
GB.EXE AFILE.TXT *.BAK
Will first load AFILE.TXT and then it will load each file in the current
directory that has an extension of BAK until 9 total files are loaded or
there are no more .BAK files to load.
A third option is to place a text file named GBROWSE.LST in the
directory from which you call GB.EXE. If GB finds this file when it
executes, it will open it and treat each line in the file as a file name to
load. For example, suppose you are starting GB from a directory named
D:\TEXT and this directory contains a file named GBROWSE.LST that contains
the following lines:
AFILE.TXT
E:\DOCS\MYDOC.DOC
THENAME.DAT
GB will attempt to load each of these files into successive windows. Just
remember that the maximum number of file windows that can be loaded at one
time is 9.
You can also mix and match the above options. For example, the
command:
GB MYTEXT.TXT ??CD.DAT
executed in a directory that contains GBROWSE.LST as defined above will
cause GB to load the three files in GBROWSE.LST first, then MYTEXT.TXT, and
finally all files matching ??CD.DAT until 9 total files have been loaded.
GBROWSE.LST may be created by loading several files and pressing Alt+S
to save the file in the active directory.
6.4 The Auto-Scroll Feature
BG provides an automatic text scrolling feature that will scroll the
text of the active file down through the file at a user-controlled rate. To
activate this feature, press Alt+A. The scroll speed can be controlled
during the scroll with the Up/Down Arrow keys. Pressing the Up Arrow slows
down the scroll rate and pressing the Down Arrow speeds it up. The scroll
can be stopped by pressing Alt+A, the Space Bar, or the Esc key.

6.5 About GBROWSE.HLP
GBROWSE.HLP is a standard ASCII text file that is loaded and displayed
by GB when the help function is invoked. The user may add personalized help
lines to this file or modify the current lines as desired. To accomplish
this, simply load GBROWSE.HLP into a text editor (such as QEDIT) and make
the desired changes. Text line length of this file is limited to 70
characters.
GB will always attempt to load the help text file from the directory
from which GB was executed. The best strategy in using GB is to place it in
a directory that is on the DOS path along with GBROWSE.HLP and call it from
anywhere in your system.
